Goals

Provide the first year graduate students with a comprehensive coverage of the fundamental semiconductor physics that is essential to the understanding of basic device physics and the operation principle of a wide variety of semiconductor electronic and optoelectronic devices as well as novel quantum effect devices.

 

Topics

¡¤        Classification of solids and crystal structures. (4 hours)

¡¤        Lattice dynamics and phonon spectrum. (4)

¡¤        Semiconductor statistics. (4)

¡¤        Energy band theory: one-dimensional (1-D), 2-D and 3-D systems. (8)

¡¤        Equilibrium properties of semiconductors. (6)

¡¤        Recombination mechanisms and excess carrier phenomena (6)

¡¤        Carrier transport phenomena and scattering mechanisms in semiconductors (8)

 

Homework

 6 homework assignments.

 It's OK to talk about the class and the assignments with your friends. It's

 not OK to just copy their work. Cheating and plagiarism will be punished

     according to UF's standard procedures.

     Late assignments are only accepted with permission of instructor.
