About Us

Background

The Biophotonics & Microsystems Laboratory (BML) was established by Dr. Huikai Xie in 2003. BML is associated with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and is part of the Interdisciplinary Microsystems Group at the University of Florida.

Mission

Our mission is to develop enabling micro/nanofabrication technology and build innovative integrated microsystems with improved performance, functionality and affordability for medical, industrial, space and consumer electronics applications.  The current research activities include CMOS-MEMS fabrication, integrated inertial sensors, sensor interface circuits design, high-Q resonators, micromirrors, microlenses, electrothermomechanical modeling, and endoscopic biomedical imaging probes for OCT, confocal imaging and multi-photon imaging.

Major research thrusts

Inexpensive biomedical imaging instruments

This lateral shift free micromirror device has been cleverly designed to move in the vertical direction only. It is actuated electrothermally by using arrays of thermal bimorph actuators.
